4040 Taper Lock Bushings
Typically, bushings are replaceable, while integral bearings are permanent and should not be replaced unless worn or damaged. Bushings are most commonly used in machinery, where they allow relative movement between components. The bushing is usually an integral unit, while the bearing may have several parts. Simple bushings can be made of brass, bronze, or steel. It is often integrated into precision machined parts and helps reduce friction and wear. Installation
1. Clean all oil, dirt, and paint from the shaft, bushing holes, bushing exterior, and bores of components (sprockets, pulleys, etc.).
2. Insert the bushing into the assembly. Match hole patterns, not threaded holes (each hole is threaded on 1 side only).
3. Thread the set screw or cap screw into the half-threaded hole shown below. Install the assembly on the shaft.
4. Alternately set the torque setting or cap screw* to the recommended torque setting in the table below.
5. Fill all unoccupied holes with grease.
Removal
1. Remove any retaining or cap screws.
2. Insert the set screw or cap screw into the above hole.
3. To reinstall, complete all 5 (5) installation instructions.
If you are replacing a transmission bushing, you will need to use a tapered lock bushing. The parts are simple but should be installed correctly. The diameter of the shaft bore and its length determines the size of the Taper-Lock bushing. The taper reduces the length of the through-hole and allows the bushing to fit better than flanged bushings. The taper is 8 degrees long, so a 1.5″ diameter taper is 1-1/2″ long. For metric applications, the metric designation is “MM”. Taper locking bushings are flush with sprockets or pulleys.
The Taper-Lock bushing system allows the sprocket hub to be smaller than ever. The through-hole length dimension has been reduced by approximately 3%, and the shaft can be mounted close to the bearing without any problems. These bushings feature tapered handles with wedge action, making them easy to install and remove without deforming the shaft. These bushings come in different sizes and styles.
